by Joseph R. Pitts1
The landmark homeschool legislation recently signed by the Governor testivies to the diligence, dedication and astuteness of homeschooling families in Pennsylvania as they pursued their long journey to success. In this book, Howard has done an excellent job of describing in detail the frustration and excitement of the legislative process.
From the beginning of their labors, I have been impressed with their thoroughness, their willingness to listen, and with their perseverence. In my sixteen years as a lawmaker, I have never witnessed a more effective campaign.
The best part of the legislative victory is the knowledge that homeschooling can flourish and grow and share their innovative and creative techniques with other families. Public and private schools should join hands with homeschooling families to advance the education of Pennsylvania's children so that all our citizens can reach their full potential.
It has been an honor and a privilege to work with Howard Richman, Tom Eldredge, the leaders of Parent Educators of Pennsylvania, and the homeschooling families throughout this effort. Together we surmounted difficult odds and formidable opposition. Our homeschooling families deserve great credit. They never lost faith in a just cause. They persuaded many opponents of the merits of homeschooling. Like David, they went up against giants -- and won. If I had only gotten to know them as friends in this campaign, and there was no statute, dayenu!
